School Commons Digital Displays
Completed: 2022 | Project Manager: ICS | Contractor: HyTec
In 2022, Digital Horizons partnered with ICS and contractor HyTec to design and implement a multi-display AV system for a school commons area—transforming it into a flexible space for announcements, presentations, and everyday communication. The goal was to create a reliable, easy-to-use solution that could be operated by staff without the need for extensive training while offering the flexibility to serve both scheduled programming and impromptu events.
At the heart of the system are five large-screen TVs strategically mounted throughout the commons area. These displays are tied together through a smart video switching system that accommodates both scheduled digital signage and live presentations. The district uses Chromebooks to drive their signage content, and each display is programmed to automatically switch between the signage feed and a local HDMI input, depending on the activity in the space.
To support live use—such as assemblies, student-led presentations, or community events—an in-wall HDMI connection allows a laptop or tablet to easily take over the display system. The audio from this connection is routed through a digital audio processor to maintain consistent quality and prevent feedback, while a wireless handheld microphone enables presenters to be clearly heard across the space.
Audio coverage was critical in the open commons environment, and a distributed speaker system was installed in the ceiling to provide even, natural sound throughout. Whether it’s background music during passing time or a speaker addressing a full room, the system adapts with clarity and coverage that meets the school’s diverse needs.
All equipment for the system—video switching, audio processing, amplification, and network control—was centralized in a wall-mounted equipment rack. This approach keeps the space clean and secure while allowing easy access for future updates, servicing, or expansion. Neatly labeled and professionally harnessed, the rack supports the long-term functionality of the system.
To make daily use as straightforward as possible, a simple keypad interface was installed near the main presentation area. With a single button press, staff can activate the system, select inputs, and begin using the displays and audio without requiring technical support. The end result is a commons area that feels modern, connected, and functional—supporting the school’s mission to foster engagement, communication, and learning in every setting.
