They wanted a solution that would provide immediate notification if someone entered the pool area unexpectedly.

The challenge was finding the right technology to accomplish that goal.

The First Solution Wasn’t the Best Solution

Initially, the project team explored an infrared-based detection system.

Infrared security systems work similarly to the safety sensors commonly found on garage doors. A transmitter sends an infrared beam to a receiver. If someone passes through that beam, the system recognizes the interruption and triggers an alert.

In certain situations, infrared barriers work extremely well.

However, this project presented unique challenges.

The home was located in International Falls, Minnesota, an area known for some of the coldest winter temperatures in the country. Snow accumulation, ice, wildlife activity, and environmental exposure all needed to be considered.

A system that performs perfectly in one environment may not be the ideal solution in another.

After evaluating the options, it became clear that a different approach would provide better results.

How Line Crossing Detection Works

Instead of relying on infrared sensors, the solution ultimately came from the home’s surveillance camera system.

Modern security cameras often include a feature called line crossing detection, sometimes referred to as line breaking or virtual boundary detection.

The concept is surprisingly simple.

Using the camera’s software, installers create invisible lines or boundaries within the camera’s field of view. These boundaries can be positioned around specific areas of concern.

When a person, vehicle, or object crosses one of those virtual lines, the system immediately recognizes the event and initiates a response.

In this case, virtual boundaries were established around the perimeter of the swimming pool.

The result was an invisible protective zone that could detect when someone entered the pool area.

Unlike physical barriers or sensors, the system required no visible equipment around the pool itself.

Everything operated through the surveillance cameras already being installed at the property.

What Happens When the Boundary Is Crossed?

One of the biggest advantages of intelligent surveillance systems is flexibility.

Detecting an event is only the beginning. What happens next can be customized based on the homeowner’s preferences and priorities.

When someone crosses a virtual boundary, the system can trigger a wide variety of responses.

Possible actions include:
