What Is a Smart Home Scene? How Control4 Makes Home Automation Actually Automatic

One of the biggest reasons homeowners become frustrated with smart home technology is that it doesn’t always feel very smart.

You have an app for your lights. Another app controls the thermostat. Your motorized shades have their own remote. The security system lives somewhere else on your phone. Your music requires another app, and turning on the television might still involve a collection of remotes sitting on the coffee table.

Technically, you have a smart home.

But you’re still doing all the work.

This is where smart home scenes and true home automation can completely change the experience. Rather than controlling every piece of technology individually, a properly designed automation system allows multiple systems to work together. One command can trigger a series of actions, or better yet, those actions can happen automatically based on what you’re already doing.

What Is a Smart Home Scene?

A smart home scene is essentially a shortcut for multiple actions that you would otherwise have to perform individually.

Think about what you do when you leave your house.

You might walk through several rooms turning off lights. You check the television. You make sure the music is off. You lower the thermostat. You close the shades. Finally, you arm the security system and leave.

Each individual task is simple.

The problem is that there may be ten, twenty, or even fifty individual actions involved.

A smart home scene combines those actions into a single command.

Instead of walking through the entire house, you press a button labeled “Goodbye.”

That’s the foundation of scene-based home automation.

The extent of what a scene can accomplish depends on the systems integrated under the Control4 automation platform. If the home includes lighting control, motorized shades, audio, video, climate control, and security, all of those systems can potentially participate in the same scene.

The more systems that communicate with each other, the more powerful automation becomes.

The Goodbye Scene: One of the Most Practical Automations

One of the most common scenes we create is a Goodbye scene.

At its simplest, pressing Goodbye turns off the lights throughout the home.

That alone can be incredibly convenient, especially in a large house. There’s no walking upstairs to check the bedroom lights or heading back downstairs because someone left the kitchen pendants on.

But we can take that scene much further.

At the Digital Horizons Experience Center, our Goodbye scene incorporates our motorized Lutron shades. When we leave, the lights turn off and the blackout shades automatically close.

Part of the reason is security.

With the shades closed, someone outside can’t easily look through the windows and see the technology and equipment inside the Experience Center.

A homeowner could use the same concept.

Press Goodbye and the home could:

  • Turn off interior lights
  • Close motorized shades
  • Turn off televisions and audio systems
  • Adjust the thermostat
  • Arm the security system
  • Leave selected exterior lights on

The exact actions are completely customizable.

Your Goodbye scene doesn’t have to look like your neighbor’s Goodbye scene. In fact, it probably shouldn’t.

Good automation is designed around the people who actually live in the home.

Welcome Home Without Resetting the Entire House

The opposite of Goodbye is a Welcome Home scene.

Again, the concept is simple.

What do you normally do when you arrive home?

You turn on a few lights. You adjust the temperature. Maybe you open the shades. Perhaps you turn on music in the kitchen or living room.

A Welcome Home scene can do those things simultaneously.

At our Experience Center, the Welcome scene turns on selected lighting, opens the motorized shades, and starts music at a predetermined volume.

The space is immediately ready.

For a lake home or vacation property, this type of automation can become even more valuable.

Imagine driving to your lake home in the Brainerd Lakes Area after being away for several weeks. When you arrive, the temperature is comfortable, selected lights are on, the shades are positioned correctly, and the home feels ready for you.

You aren’t spending the first twenty minutes resetting the house.

You simply walk in.

When Smart Home Scenes Become True Automation

Scenes are incredibly convenient, but there is an important distinction between smart home control and actual home automation.

If you have to press a button every time you want something to happen, you’re still controlling the home.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. In many situations, pressing a clearly labeled keypad button is the best and most reliable solution.

But automation becomes much more powerful when the home can respond to something you’re already doing.

The security system is a great example.

Many homeowners already arm their security system when they leave and disarm it when they return.

That action can become a trigger.

Instead of pressing Goodbye and then arming the security system, the act of arming the security system can automatically activate the Goodbye scene.

The home knows you’re leaving.

The lights turn off.

The televisions shut down.

The music stops.

The motorized shades close.

The thermostat adjusts.

Everything happens because you performed one action you were already going to perform.

That is true home automation.

Your Security System Can Tell the Rest of the Home What to Do

One of the most valuable parts of a professionally integrated smart home is the ability for different systems to communicate.

Your security system doesn’t have to exist independently from your lighting control system.

Your lighting doesn’t have to ignore your motorized shades.

Your thermostat doesn’t need to operate without understanding whether the house is occupied.

With Control4 home automation, the status of one system can become a reference point for another.

Consider a seasonal lake home.

When the security system is armed, the automation system can assume no one is currently occupying the property. The temperature can be adjusted, lights can turn off, shades can close, and entertainment systems can shut down.

When the security system is disarmed, the house can respond differently.

The temperature adjusts to a comfortable setting.

Selected lights turn on.

The shades open.

Music could even begin playing.

By the time you walk through the door, the home is ready.

You didn’t open five apps.

You didn’t scroll through menus.

You didn’t issue a voice command.

The house simply responded to what you were already doing.

Smart Home Scenes Aren’t Just for the Whole House

Not every scene needs to control the entire home.

Some of the most useful smart home scenes are designed for one specific room.

A home theater is a perfect example.

A button labeled “Watch Movie” might turn on the projector, lower the projection screen, adjust the lighting, and activate the audio system.

The main lights could turn off while linear lighting along the stairs remains at a low level so people can safely find their seats.

Once everyone is settled, another command could lower those pathway lights even further.

This is where thoughtful home theater design and smart home automation begin working together.

The technology disappears into the experience.

You aren’t thinking about the projector.

You aren’t thinking about the surround sound processor.

You aren’t thinking about which lights need to be dimmed.

You’re thinking about the movie.

That’s exactly how the technology should work.

Lighting That Changes Based on the Time of Day

One of my favorite applications of smart home automation is conditional lighting.

The idea is straightforward: the same button can behave differently depending on the time of day.

Consider under-cabinet lighting or linear LED lighting in a kitchen.

At two o’clock in the afternoon on a cloudy Minnesota day, you may want those lights at 80 percent brightness.

At two o’clock in the morning when you’re walking into the kitchen for a glass of water or a midnight snack, 80 percent brightness is probably the last thing you want.

With conditional lighting programming, the button doesn’t have to change.

You press the same button.

During the day, the lights turn on brightly.

In the middle of the night, those same lights may turn on at only 10 percent.

The homeowner doesn’t have to think about it.

The lighting control system already understands the conditions and responds accordingly.

This is a perfect example of technology making a home simpler rather than more complicated.

Can Security Cameras Trigger Your Lights?

This is where automation can become a little more creative.

In certain smart home projects, we’ve used surveillance cameras as motion triggers for lighting control systems.

Normally, you might install a traditional motion sensor that turns on an exterior light when movement is detected.

That works well with a conventional light switch.

But a sophisticated lighting control system operates differently. You can’t always place a traditional motion sensor between the electrical circuit and the smart lighting system because you’re essentially creating two different points of control.

Instead, we can sometimes use the surveillance camera itself.

If the camera detects motion during a specific period of time, it can communicate with the automation system and tell certain lights to turn on.

For example, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., motion detected in a specific area could trigger exterior lighting.

Sounds simple, right?

Technically, it is possible.

In practice, this is where careful smart home programming becomes extremely important.

Just Because You Can Automate Something Doesn’t Mean You Should

One of the most important lessons we’ve learned after decades of working with home technology is that automation needs boundaries.

Camera-triggered lighting is a good example.

Every homeowner believes they understand their schedule.

Then real life happens.

Someone comes home late.

Guests stay longer than expected.

The dog goes outside at an unusual time.

A deer walks through the yard.

Snow blows across the camera’s field of view.

Suddenly, an automation that seemed simple has dozens of variables.

We can create overrides. We can add schedules. We can adjust camera analytics and detection zones.

But at a certain point, the automation may require more ongoing management than the convenience it provides.

That’s why our job as a technology integrator isn’t simply to say, “Yes, we can do that.”

Our job is also to explain the potential limitations.

Sometimes the best solution is full automation.

Sometimes the best solution is a button.

The goal is always reliability and ease of use.

The Complicated Work Happens Behind the Button

When homeowners visit the Digital Horizons Experience Center, one of the things we encourage them to do is press the buttons.

That sounds simple, but it’s important.

A professionally designed smart home shouldn’t feel intimidating.

You shouldn’t need a manual to turn on the lights.

A keypad button might simply say “Welcome,” “Goodbye,” “Movie,” or “Good Night.”

You press it.

The home responds.

What the homeowner doesn’t see is the programming, system design, wiring, product selection, and integration happening behind that button.

That’s our job.

We handle the complicated part so the homeowner gets the simple part.

When it’s designed correctly, smart home automation can almost feel like magic.

But it’s not magic.

It’s thoughtful design, careful programming, and a deep understanding of how people actually use their homes.

The Best Smart Home Scenes Are Built Around Your Life

There is no universal list of scenes that every smart home needs.

A family with young children may use their home completely differently from a retired couple.

A lake home has different needs than a primary residence.

Someone who entertains every weekend may want completely different automation than someone who values quiet evenings and a simple routine.

That’s why smart home automation should always start with a conversation.
